How an Auto Transport Firm Cut Quotes to Under a Second

An auto transport company's quotes were too slow for digital car buyers. An ML pricing model now quotes in under a second at over 94% accuracy, opening a new market segment.

the challenge

The biggest operational and growth bottleneck was their speed and accuracy in quoting transports. A large and growing market segment, expanding as auto buying became more digital, went untapped because capturing it required instant quote generation, which the company lacked.

what they built

BaseForge analyzed thousands of historical transactions and built an ensemble machine learning system that automated quoting with instant, data-driven pricing. We deployed it behind a customer-facing API, letting customers and partners connect directly and receive instant quotes, unlocking a significant share of the market.
The team started with the client's transaction history, hundreds of thousands of past quotes across regions, and built pricing features around recency, frequency, location and third-party benchmarks. Some routes showed up rarely in the data or not at all, so the team generated synthetic data by applying statistically derived levers to the nearest high-traffic route, which noticeably improved accuracy on outlier quotes. External variables like fuel prices also moved pricing, so they were sourced from public and paid third-party providers and combined with the client's own parameters. An ensemble of machine learning models produced the price once a quote request carried the minimum set of parameters. The models were packaged in a custom API container so customers and partners could connect directly and get a price back instantly. Accuracy was measured against an unseen random test set, and the team waited until the model cleared a threshold it was willing to stand behind before quotes went live.

Ai ROLE
The model ingests a series of parameters for a quote. Once the minimum number of parameters is met, it generates a quote based on its training data and finetuning.

implementation complexity

A quote could come in for a route we had never seen before. To close gaps in the training data, we generated synthetic data using statistically derived levers applied to the nearest high-traffic route, an approach that significantly improved accuracy on outlier cases. External variables like fuel prices also affected pricing and had to be sourced from third parties and combined with our internally collected parameters.

frequently asked questions

How did an auto transport company get instant, accurate quotes with machine learning?

It trained an ensemble machine learning model on hundreds of thousands of past transactions and served it through an API. The model prices a quote in under a second and matches the manual process with over 94% accuracy on an unseen test set.

What AI approach was used for the auto transport pricing engine?

A gradient-boosted ensemble mixing level-wise and leaf-wise boosting, served from a custom API container, with features built on recency, frequency, location and third-party benchmarks such as fuel prices. Synthetic data filled gaps on rarely quoted routes.

What results did the auto transport company achieve?

Quotes delivered in under a second at above 94% accuracy against the manual process. Instant quoting also opened the remote-buyer and online-retailer segment, which BaseForge sizes at roughly $2.7B of a $10.5B vehicle-shipping market.

How long did the machine learning pricing project take?

About two to four months to first results. Discovery started in late March, database access came in mid-April and the first model shipped in early May, with tuning and new data sources added through August.

Who is machine learning quote pricing best for?

Logistics and transport companies, and other firms with large quote histories, that win business by getting accurate prices back to customers instantly.
